What We Do
__________________________________________________
Displacement Free Campaign
STOP is confronting the displacement of low income blacks in part by organizing a strong base of tenants associations (TAs) in subsidized housing. These tenants associations work on improving building conditions, preserving their buildings, and other issues. They do this by working towards greater accountability with their owners, managers, and HUD. They also mobilize tenant and community support to implement their rights like the Federally Assisted Housing Preservation Act.
We are also working to sustain and expand a neighborhood network of homeowners and non-subsidized tenants, which will be brought together with our TAs to impact community development.
Through networks like the city wide project based section 8 coalition, the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign (PPEHRC), and the National Alliance of HUD Tenants (NAHT), STOP’s TAs are coming together with other TA’s on the neighborhood, city, and national level to work on shared issues, such as greater tenant oversight over HUD.
STOP is also working to implement alternative affordable housing options by and conducting research and building partnerships which could lead to a community land trust.
