Here’s the situation:
We are calling on those above to stop the eviction of Christiana Powell and three other families from Ms. Powell's building.
US Bank illegally changed her mortgage from FHA to conventional. This led to payments ballooning after her mother passed away in 2016, from $800 a month to $3,500 a month. Ms. Powell was illegally foreclosed on and has been fighting in the courts to win back her property ever since. In 2021, her property was bought by a developer called GA Roslyn, which has since been working to illegally evict Ms. Powell and the other three families living in Ms. Powell's building.
Ms. Powell’s grandfather bought the property in 1950; his family was one of the first to racially integrate Woodlawn. They've to fought to remain in Woodlawn through the community's ups and downs. Ms. Christiana was born and raised in Woodlawn. With the Obama Center under construction, property values have skyrocketed, increasing land speculation and displacing long-time residents.
The Cook County sheriff served Ms. Powell her final eviction notice last week, which means that the sheriff could show up any day now. Ms. Powell and the three other families who live in the building are refusing to leave.
