We are checking in on our people
How are you doing? STOP has made over 600 phone calls, checking in on our people. We are hearing that many are ok, and sheltering in place. But we are also hearing that folks have been laid off, and are struggling to feed their families and pay rent.
We are doing our best to help in ways that we can. So far we have raised some funds to help with some grocery deliveries, and we will do the best we can until the funds run out. Please let us know if you need something or are hearing about neighbors in need: info@stopchicago.org or 773-217-9598. And see below for links to resources.
Now more than ever, housing is a human right.
Hundreds of homeless people are in tent cities or cramped in shelters 2 feet apart from one another. These dangerous conditions put them at high risk of getting coronavirus. With the Chicago Housing Initiative we are calling for the Mayor to open up the nearly 2000 vacant public housing units for homeless families. Sign the petition: bit.ly/COVIDEmergencyHousing
We are also calling on the Governor to stop the eviction and foreclosure process. Evictions have been put on hold for now BUT landlords can still file paperwork to evict people for not paying rent in April.
Also, tenants at MAC Properties in Hyde Park have started a rent strike: fb.com/tenantsunited1
Contact us if you want to help phone bank or get involved in these fights.
Now more than ever, we need more rights
STOP is working in coalition with United Working Families and progressive organizations on the Right to Recovery: a set of demands to protect workers and provide protective equipment for those who must still go out to work. It also demands rights to water, housing, power, healthcare, education, income security, liberty and protections for seniors & folks with disabilities. We’ll release the demands soon. Stay tuned.
