Three generations on reparations & UofC’s racism: a reunion & fundraiser

From the organizing committee: Adam Light, Duff Morton, Laurel Chen, Olivia Woollam, Natalie Naculich, William Thomas, Dominic Surya. With help from Graduate Students United!

Join us on Thursday, May 5, 7-8:15pm CT by video/call for a reunion, panel, and fundraiser of activists and alumni around the University of Chicago.

Let’s reconnect, share about the decades of organizing we’ve been part of, get up to speed on this moment, and contribute to next steps! We’ll enjoy time to talk in groups, we’ll hear from panelists including

  • Jay Travis, 2002 UofC social-work alum and former Kenwood Oakland Community Organization director

  • Ryan Lugalia-Hollon, 2004 UofC anthropology alum and leader in the student group that co-founded STOP

  • Savannah Brown, STOP housing organizer, and Dia Lawson, STOP co-youth organizer and current student

…and we’ll hear about STOP’s current work: demanding reparations-scale funding from the University of Chicago.

With its Community Benefits Agreement coalition and University of Chicago allies, STOP is demanding that the University give $1 billion, or $50 million for each of the next 20 years, to build affordable housing in Woodlawn. This builds (literally!) on land STOP won from the City in its 2020 CBA ordinance. And of course, this follows decades of “urban renewal” in which the University has displaced Black residents.

Current students, now is the time to organize another generation of allies; to join, email uc.againstdisplacement@gmail.com (and like fb.com/UChicagoAgainstDisplacement). And alumni, you are the group most able to fund this work; give at stopchicago.org/donate. See you soon!
